Show summary Exhumed reservoirs providing evidence of CO2 accumulation and transport in geological history offer a unique possibility to supplement our knowledge on leakage processes observed along faults and fractures. A field location and drill core from Central Utah, USA has been used to characterize mechanical properties and fracture distributions in multiple reservoir-caprock couplets where bleaching pattern around fractures provides evidence of fluid flow. Analysis shows that fractures are mainly observed in low porosity units corresponding to layers with high strength and stiffness. Microstructural characterization substantiates evidence of fracture aperture separated by areas with mineral precipitation clogging aperture. Minerals observed filling fractures are calcite, gypsum and pyrite, suggestive of precipitation from reducing fluids. Fracture aperture distribution and identification of mineralogical changes along the fracture surface provides important input for improved, novel analyses of CO2 transport properties of fractures and faults. Abstract The hydrogeological system of an ecologically sensitive alpine floodplain in the Valle di Blenio, Switzerland, was investigated using hydrochemical and 3H-3He dating methods. Water samples from six wells and from different surface locations were ana-lyzed. The analysis of the concentrations of major ions in conjunction with age determination by the 3H-3He-method allowed the main hydrological properties of the system to be consistently characterized.

The water quality of a drinking water production well field is determined by the land use in the capture area, geochemistry of the aquifer and the travel time distributions of the production wells. The aim of our study was to project the water quality of the production well field Holten The Netherlands based solely on the travel time distributions of the production wells and water quality data from the monitoring network in the vicinity of the well field.

The Holten production wells are located in the east of the Netherlands, in sandy ice-pushed ridges. Water quality data from the monitoring network provided the regional aggregated trend in water quality parameters, related to the time of recharge. These trends generally show an increase in agricultural contamination up to the s, but decreasing concentrations in younger water. The regional aggregated trend of nitrate shows complete denitrification in groundwater older than 15 years.

Excess N2 coincides with elevated sulfate concentrations, demonstrating denitrification by pyrite oxidation. The regional aggregated trends from the monitoring wells provided the source input for the water quality prognosis based on the travel time distributions of the production wells. Shallow production wells with a large young component are projected to show water quality improvements in the near future, while production wells with intermediate age distributions respond slower.

The three deep wells produce a mixture of groundwater containing both young and very old water. These are projected to show deterioration in water quality in the future, although nitrate concentrations in these wells are kept low by denitrification. To reproduce the historical time series of concentrations in individual pumping wells it appeared crucial to calculate the time-varying travel time distributions using a regional groundwater flow model.

The temporal variations in travel time distributions were caused by mutual interference between the wells during expansion of the well field and changes in pumping regimes over the past 40 years.
