Show summary Exhumed reservoirs providing evidence of CO2 accumulation and transport in geological history offer a unique possibility to supplement our knowledge on leakage processes observed along faults and fractures. A field location and drill core from Central Utah, USA has been used to characterize mechanical properties and fracture distributions in multiple reservoir-caprock couplets where bleaching pattern around fractures provides evidence of fluid flow. Analysis shows that fractures are mainly observed in low porosity units corresponding to layers with high strength and stiffness. Microstructural characterization substantiates evidence of fracture aperture separated by areas with mineral precipitation clogging aperture. Minerals observed filling fractures are calcite, gypsum and pyrite, suggestive of precipitation from reducing fluids. Fracture aperture distribution and identification of mineralogical changes along the fracture surface provides important input for improved, novel analyses of CO2 transport properties of fractures and faults. Abstract The hydrogeological system of an ecologically sensitive alpine floodplain in the Valle di Blenio, Switzerland, was investigated using hydrochemical and 3H-3He dating methods. Water samples from six wells and from different surface locations were ana-lyzed. The analysis of the concentrations of major ions in conjunction with age determination by the 3H-3He-method allowed the main hydrological properties of the system to be consistently characterized.
Two geochemically distinct water zones can be dis-tinguished:

Water age The history of tritium 3H and helium as tracers in hydrology began in the s and early s, when large amounts of tritium were released at the tests of thermonuclear bombs in the atmosphere. Soon it was discovered, that the radioactive superheavy hydrogen isotope 3H is an ideal tracer for hydrological processes of all kind, because it is readily incorporated in the water molecule to form HTO, and then takes part in the global water cycle e. Begemann and Libby, ; Suess, These data form the basis for tracer applications of tritium.
As long as a water parcel is in contact with the atmosphere, the tritiogenic 3He 3He formed by tritium decay is exchanged with the atmosphere. If this exchange is cut off, the tritiogenic 3He accumulates; the 3H-3He-clock is running. A water parcel is cut off from the atmosphere for instance when it infiltrates into the groundwater or when it sinks into the deep water of of oceans or lakes.
In modern surface waters, both isotopes are present at levels on the order of 1 Mio. Only about 1 out of water molecules is tagged with the radioactive hydrogen isotope. Measurement of tritium concentrations by – decay counting became feasible in the , when tritium levels were 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than natural. Measurement of 3He was made possible at the same time by progress in noble gas mass spectrometry.

It lies south of the Ol Doinyo Eburru complex and north of the Suswa volcano; it is east of the rift valley’s western margin and west of Mount Longonot , a stratovolcano. The complex contains many centers of volcanic activity that often erupt in small volumes. This is thought to be related to a caldera 11 kilometres 6. Although dating is not precise, it seems that the older rocks date to before 9, years before present, while the youngest rocks in the Olobutot formation are between and years old.
However the absence of tritium in the steam shows that the water is taking at least fifty years to travel from the lake, if that is indeed the source. Two unsuccessful test wells had been drilled by Thirty production wells had been sunk by of which twenty-seven were productive, each yielding from 1. Following rising power demands, a third station, Olkaria II was built with a production capacity of MW with 5. It is powered by 3 Mitsubishi turbines each capable of generating 35MW. The steam is obtained from 22 wells each producing an estimate of 35 tonnes of steam per hour.

History of research Brief overview The idea of using human-initiated fusion reactions was first made practical for military purposes in nuclear weapons. In a hydrogen bomb, the energy released by a fission weapon is used to compress and heat fusion fuel, beginning a fusion reaction that releases a large amount of neutrons that increases the rate of fission. The first fission-fusion-fission-based weapons released some times more energy than early fission weapons.
Attempts at controlling fusion had already started by this point. This was the first detailed examination of the pinch concept, and small efforts to experiment with the pinch concept started at several sites in the UK.

General background Tritium 3H or T is the radioactive isotope of hydrogen that decays with a half life of Tritium is produced naturally in the upper atmosphere by interaction of nitrogen, and, to a lesser extent, oxygen with cosmic rays. After oxidation to HTO, it takes part in the natural water cycle. These tests which were mainly performed in the early s, led to an increase of tritium in precipitation over the continents of the northern hemisphere from roughly 5 TU to levels of the order of TU.
One TU Tritium Unit means a tritium to hydrogen ratio of Whereas the addition of bomb tritium to the environment practically eliminated the use of natural tritium as a tracer, it offered a new tool, i. If the tritium delivery as a function of time can be reconstructed, this penetration process can be used for quantitative studies of water movement through identification of the bomb peak in certain ground water bodies.
However, there are natural limits to this method because tritium decay and dispersion make it increasingly difficult to identify the bomb peak in groundwater. These problems can be overcome by using tritium in combination with its decay product 3He 3Hetrit as first suggested by Tolstykhin and Kamensky and experimentally confirmed by Torgersen et al. The total 3He concentration has a variety of sources equation 2: In this equation, only 3Hetot and 3Heeq are determined through measurements.
The total 4He concentration measured in a groundwater sample can be written as: If no terrigenic helium is contained in the groundwater sample, 3Hetrit can be calculated by using equation 4:

The water quality of a drinking water production well field is determined by the land use in the capture area, geochemistry of the aquifer and the travel time distributions of the production wells. The aim of our study was to project the water quality of the production well field Holten The Netherlands based solely on the travel time distributions of the production wells and water quality data from the monitoring network in the vicinity of the well field.
The Holten production wells are located in the east of the Netherlands, in sandy ice-pushed ridges. Water quality data from the monitoring network provided the regional aggregated trend in water quality parameters, related to the time of recharge. These trends generally show an increase in agricultural contamination up to the s, but decreasing concentrations in younger water. The regional aggregated trend of nitrate shows complete denitrification in groundwater older than 15 years.
Excess N2 coincides with elevated sulfate concentrations, demonstrating denitrification by pyrite oxidation. The regional aggregated trends from the monitoring wells provided the source input for the water quality prognosis based on the travel time distributions of the production wells. Shallow production wells with a large young component are projected to show water quality improvements in the near future, while production wells with intermediate age distributions respond slower.
The three deep wells produce a mixture of groundwater containing both young and very old water. These are projected to show deterioration in water quality in the future, although nitrate concentrations in these wells are kept low by denitrification. To reproduce the historical time series of concentrations in individual pumping wells it appeared crucial to calculate the time-varying travel time distributions using a regional groundwater flow model.
The temporal variations in travel time distributions were caused by mutual interference between the wells during expansion of the well field and changes in pumping regimes over the past 40 years.
